Bound in before the half-title is a MS letter from J. E. Smith to Dawson Turner, dated from Norwich Sept. 8. 1802, folded to fit the size of the book; it is followed by a flap with the text: "Inserted, An original letter from Dr Smith; & a portrait, a private study by Edwards". The portrait is bound in facing the title-page; it is an engraving of Smith, "from a bust by Bullock. 1810". On M2v (p. 164) is pasted a note by Dawson Turner referring to a paper by Noisette on irritability in plants.
