The plants described in this work were sent by John Clayton to Gronovius. According to Stafleu, this (in its first edition) is the first work by an author other than Linnaeus to use the Linnaean system of classification.

Remains of a blue printed library label on front pastedown: VALLEY RES (with the word Rare written in pencil thereon) - presumably LEE VALLEY RESEARCH STATION? On F1r is a cancelled stamp of the Institut de Botanique of the Université de Genève.

Bound with paper over boards speckled to resemble speckled calf; rounded spine from which any inscription has been lost. Red speckled edges.
Condition noted; 20060111. Spine badly rubbed, much covering eroded. Upper corner of front board cracked. Heavy spotting on title and following leaf, but afterwards confined to light spotting along fore-edges. Cockling, to the point of creasing on early leaves. Lower corner of F1 torn.
Condition noted; 20130812. Fair. Very worn, corners very worn and lifting; spine very worn, top and bottom of spine flaking, paper spine cover largely lost, lining lifting in places. Front board, free endpaper and title-page detached from text block.
