Notes

General notes:
This work was based on the herbarium of Paul Hermann, which was later acquired by Benjamin Delessert. See A. Lourteig, "L'herbier de Paul Hermann, base du Thesaurus zeylanicus de Johan Burman", Taxon 15 (1966) pp. 24-32, for a history of this herbarium, and for determinations of the plant names.
In his preface (*4v), Burman acknowledges the help of Linnaeus; Arvid Uggla devoted an article (in Svensk Linné-Sallsk. Arsskrift (1937) II pp. 128-144) to detailing Linnaeus' role.
Title-page engraving and preface are both dated 1736 (last day of November for the preface).
Contents notes:
Provenance:
Front pastedown bears printed bookplate, showing shield with three crescents, and the inscribed name W B Coyte (presumably William Beeston Coyte of Ipswich). John Lindley's signature on title-page, and annotations throughout text.
Title history:
Language notes:
Text in Latin.
With note:
At the end of the Thesaurus zeylanicus, apparently in all copies, and continuous in collation though with distinct pagination, is a work sometimes entered separately in catalogues: Catalogi duo plantarum Africanarum. This contains two lists of plants observed at the Cape of Good Hope, the first by Paul Hermann, the second by Oldenland and Hartog; at the end is appended a list of Cape plants which had flowered in the Netherlands. Most of the second list had already been published in Kolbe's Beschrijving van de Kaap de Goede Hoop (1727), I pp. 285-325.

This copy lacks the frontispiece portrait of Burman by Quinkhard described in TL-2 928. - Text and plates annotated by John Lindley, usually with Latin binomials, sometimes with references to Species plantarum and other works, and occasionally with more detailed remarks, as on p. 33 where Aro-orchis tuberosa platyphyllos is glossed: "Flos Vanda quidam pertinet JL". - Ink annotation on rear pastedown: C.
