Notes

General notes:
Hooker's contributions to the Flora Londinensis: renaming of many plants, with reasons for the renamings given (in most but not all cases, the names are altered on the plates as well); rewritten text for the plants retained from the first edition; text for new plants, many of which are not found in the London area, so that with the second edition the work became more a British than a purely London flora; and the addition of order names according to natural classification to the original Linnaean class names.
First edition published in London, 1777-98. This issue is a re-impression of Hooker and Graves's "New edition" of 1817-1828, with new title pages.
Each volume has separate title page, identical except for the volume number.
F. Cardew's "A note on the number of plates in Curtis's Flora Londinensis ..." (1950), and a handwritten note by W.T. Stearn on the same subject, are loosely inserted at the front of Volume 1.
Complete imprint statement: London: Henry G. Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden. MDCCCXXXV.
Each plate has an accompanying leaf of text, generally printed on one side only, though that for the composite plate of Diphyscium foliosum and Buxbaumia aphylla (vol. 2 plate 180) involves five sides, on three leaves. The plates in the Lindley Library copy are arranged alphabetically, and given a new numbering sequence in pencil. Plate 615 is bound facing the text for the previous plate.
Contents notes:
Each volume has a separate title-page, identical except for the volume number, and at the end of volume V are 26 pages of Indexes: four for each volume separately and a General Index, in Latin and English, of the plants illustrated in the whole work. This last comprises 647 plates. The Lindley Library copy contains 646 plates, lacking only the plate and description of Bartsia viscosa (Pl. [69]).
