The Systema vegetabilium consists of the botanical portion (Tom. 2: Regnum vegetabile) of the Systema naturae. It was first published independently in 1774, as the thirteenth edition (i.e. counting the twelve editions of the Systema naturae). This translation was made from that thirteenth edition.
This translation was made from the 1778 edition of the Genera plantarum, edited by Reichard. The Botanical Society at Lichfield consisted of Erasmus Darwin, Brooke Boothby, and John Jackson, the main translator, and printer, of the work.

The Catalogue of English and Scotch names that appears at the end of the second volume, with a title-page giving a date of 1784, was later re-issued, in a textually identical but reset version, to accompany the 1787 Families of plants.
Provenance:
The name Bateman is written in ink on the title-page, and Shobdon Court on the pastedown, of each volume. The two inscriptions are in different hands, "Shobdon Court" in an 18th-century hand and "Bateman" later.
