Notes

General notes:
12 centuriae bound in four volumes.
Most of the captions cite entries in Linnaeus's Species plantarum, but give as the main entry the full descriptive polynomial, relegating the single specific epithet to a subordinate position (and sometimes the epithets do not agree with Linnaeus's). - Some of the specimens bear names that are classed as uncertain in their application in Jarvis's Order out of chaos, such as Euonymus europaeus var. tenuifolius, Myrtus communis var. romana, Prunus cerasus var. austera, and Sisymbrium amphibium var. terrestre; as the prints were made from the plants themselves, they could conceivably throw some light on the clarification of the names.
The work was published in twelve Centuriae between 1761 and 1764. Dates as recorded on title-pages: I, 1761; II, 1760; III, 1761; IV, 1758; V, 1758; VI, 1759; VII, 1760; VIII, 1761; IX, 1762; X, 1763; XI, 1764; XII, 1764. All the title-pages in Centuriae I-III have had longer volume numbers (Vii, VIII) printed, and the ink scraped out of the irrelevant numerals. - A second edition was issued in 1763-4 (see Stafleu for dates of the individual Centuriae).
Johann Gottfried Trampe, whose signature appears on the dedication in the final volume, was a bookseller/publisher in Halle, and therefore presumably the publisher of this work.
Contents notes:
Some Centuriae have, after their title-pages, two or more leaves of letterpress, without page numbers but with printers' signatures that sometimes treat the title-page as the first leaf in the gathering. Centuria I has two leaves (B2-B3); consisting of Kniphof's Vorbericht, dated from Erfurth, 20 March 1757. - Centuria IV has three leaves (B2-3, C), consisting of a Vorrede signed by Friedrich Wilhelm von Leyser, 7 February 1758. - Centuria VI has three leaves (A-A2, B), entitled Vorbericht zur VIten Centurie, signed by Leyser 10 April 1759, giving a summary of Linnaean classification. - Centuria VII has three leaves consisting of a Vorrede (B-B2) signed by Leyser 2 February 1760, and an unsigned leaf with a Verzeichnis or list of the plants figured. - Centuriae VIII-XI each have a single unsigned leaf (Verzeichnis). - Centuria XII has two unsigned leaves of dedication to Friederich the 5th of Denmark, signed by Johann Gottfried Trampe, 24 September 1764, and one unsigned leaf (Verzeichnis).
Provenance:
Vol. I has various pencilled and ink annotations from former owners and/or booksellers: 75a; 2N8 / Bot. / 403de.; 2.N6.142. / 1.; 12 vols. in 4; Stowage; etc. - Annotations in red ink on front free endpaper versos: Vol. II, 2.N6.142.2; Vol. III, 2.N6.142.3; Vol. IV, 2.N6.142.4. - Pencilled annotation on Centuria XI plate 54.
