Notes

General notes:
Jacquin travelled in tropical America (Caribbean and the Venezuelan coast) in the years 1755-1759. The drawings for this work were made by him in the field. In 1763 he published the original version of the Selectarum stirpium, with plates based on his drawngs engraved by Joseph Wagner. For the most part the revised plates in this edition show either the same image, sometimes with details arranged differently on the page; in some instances the 1763 plates show only a part of the image issued in 1780-81 (e.g. branches with fewer leaves). It seems not to be known which version resembles the original drawings more closely. - In 1967 a facsimile edition was announced but did not appear.
According to Sir Joseph Banks only 12 copies of this edition (described by Pritzel as "opus rarissimum") were executed; according to Pritzel, hardly more than 18; according to the Natural History Museum catalogue, "less than 20". Before the Second World war W. T. Stearn and F. Cardew traced the presence of 12 copies in libraries: 2 in the British Museum, and 1 each in the Natural History Museum, Lindley Library, Kew, Berlin, Dresden, Göttingen, Vienna, the Arnold Arboretum, the New York City Botanic Garden, and the Library of Congress in Washington. - Marñan (2013) lists thirty copies currently extant.
The main text is printed in double columns, with a tripartite division line between them, but with every new Linnaean class, the division line is interrupted and the name of the class is spread across the page.
