Notes

General notes:
Thomas Martyn, in his "List of authors, principally English, who have written on gardening or husbandry ... (1807, in the 10th edition of Miller's Gardener's dictionary) remarks in his entry for "The universal gardener and botanist " :"According to Mr. Weston the first edition was printed for Griffin in 1770." Johnson, in his "History of English gardening" similarly remarks in his entry for "The universal gardener and botanist " "Mr. Weston says the first edition appeared in 1770 " (p.222). Richard Weston's entry in his "Catalogue of English authors who have written on husbandry, gardening, botany [etc] " (2nd edition, 1773) records for the year 1770, the title: "Mawes, Gardeners Dictionary, in 4to. Griffin.". Both the 1778 and 1797 editions of "The universal gardener and botanist " were published by G. Robinson and T. Cadell. W. Griffin did publish a number of editions of "Every man his own gardener " between 1767 and 1773. It seems unlikely, however, that "Every man his own gardener" would be described as a dictionary. There is not, at any rate, a recorded edition of "Every man his own gardener" for the year 1770, and all of the editions that are recorded appear to have been 12mo rather than 4to. Apart from the references in Martyn and Johnson, no other mention of a 1770 edition of "The universal gardener and botanist " appears to be extant.
