The first eight letters are the first English translation of Rousseau's Lettres élémentaires sur la botanique.
The additional letters by Martyn are concerned with the 24 classes of Linnaeus.
As an 'Introduction' Martyn has translated the introduction to Rousseau's Fragmens pour un dictionnaire des terms d'usage en botanique, which he described as 'A short history of the rise and progress of Botany ; particularly of Nomenclature and systematic arrangement.'

Bound in full speckled sheep, with gilt single fillets on boards. Rebacked in [textured sheep?] with five raised bands flanked by blind double fillets. Red morocco lettering-piece with gilt double fillets and title: LETTERS / ON / BOTANY / BY / ROUSSEAU. The name MARTYN is gold-tooled in a lower panel, and the date 1785 at the base of the spine. Gilt single fillets on board edges, and gilt guilloches on turn-ins. Yellow edges. Endpapers marbled in green spot pattern.
