As an 'Introduction' Martyn has translated the introduction to Rousseau's Fragmens pour un dictionnaire des terms d'usage en botanique, which he described as 'A short history of the rise and progress of Botany ; particularly of Nomenclature and systematic arrangement.'

Bound in full speckled sheep, with gilt single fillets on boards. Rebacked in [textured sheep?] with five raised bands flanked by blind double fillets. Red morocco lettering-piece with gilt double fillets and title: LETTERS / ON / BOTANY / BY / ROUSSEAU. The name MARTYN is gold-tooled in a lower panel, and the date 1785 at the base of the spine. Gilt single fillets on board edges, and gilt guilloches on turn-ins. Yellow edges. Endpapers marbled in green spot pattern.
