Summary notes:
As explained in the Preface, many additional species of plants had been added to the gardens at Kew since the publication of Hortus Kewensis, prompting a revision of that work. In the meantime, it seemed prudent to publish the present work depicting some of the new plants that had been gathered. Although the Preface mentions the additions to the gardens at Kew by the settlement at New South Wales and the travels of William Bligh, the work focusses on the plants gathered for Kew by Francis Masson in South Africa. The plates are all representations of Ericas, commonly known as heathers, grown from seeds collected by Masson, and are so accurate that it was felt unnecessary to issue any explanatory text.
Other notes:
Many of the original drawings for this volume are held in the NHM Botany Library (others are held in the library of the Kew Herbarium). A sheet of typed notes detailing the 'Original artwork of Franz Bauer of Ericas corresponding to published version' held in the Botany Library available.
