Provenance:
Front pastedown bears engraved armorial bookplate of Edward Henry Scott. Scott was proprietor of Sundridge Park, Chislehurst; during the 1870s his next-door neighbour was Napoléon III, living in exile. When Napoléon's son (Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte, Prince Impérial de France) died in 1879, he left instructions in his will that his mother was to give jewels and other precious items to the neighbours who had helped them in their exile. It may therefore be presumed that this copy arrived in England with Eugénie (for Napoléon had no opportunity to return to Paris after the defeat at Sedan), and was given by her to Scott. - Pritzel says that two copies of the Leçons de flore were printed on vellum, and one was bought by the Emperor Franz II of Austria; Brunet adds that the second copy was bought by Louis XVIII. Cardew (1953) established that the Paris copy was not held in the Bibliothèque Nationale; this copy is therefore presumed to be the Leçons de flore portion of Louis XVIII's copy of the Flo

Summary notes:
Turpin was largely a self-taught artist, but went on to become one of the most celebrated botanical illustrators. Leçons de Flore began life as part of a much larger work called Flore Medicale by F. P. Chaumeton published in 6 volumes 1814-18. Jean Louis Marie Poiret, a French clergyman, botanist and explorer who had contributed to later volumes decided to produce a 7th volume on general botany and this became Leçon de Flore. This very special copy was made for King Louis XVIII of France.
